When candidates apply for a job, their CV and LinkedIn profile are often among the first sources of information reviewed by a recruitment team. Both are meant to present a clear picture of professional experience, skills, career progression, and achievements.
However, after reviewing many candidates for a Backend Developer position, I noticed a recurring issue: several candidates had missing information on LinkedIn, or details that did not match the information included in their CV.
This creates an important question for recruiters:
Which source should we trust?
Small Differences Can Create Big Doubts
Sometimes, the difference may seem minor: an employment date that is off by a few months, a role listed under a different title, or a recent position included in the CV but missing from LinkedIn.
Most likely, there is a simple explanation. Maybe the LinkedIn profile has not been updated yet. Maybe the CV was tailored for a specific application. Maybe a job title was adjusted to better reflect the actual responsibilities.
That is understandable.
But when a recruiter is reviewing many applications, they may not have the opportunity to investigate every inconsistency or ask for clarification. When the information does not align, it can create doubt, even when the candidate has the right experience for the position.
Consistency Helps Build Trust
Your CV and LinkedIn profile do not need to be exactly the same.
A CV is often customized for a specific role. For example, a backend developer applying for a Java position may highlight experience with Spring Boot, microservices, APIs, databases, or cloud technologies.
LinkedIn, on the other hand, may provide a broader view of that person’s professional journey.
That is perfectly normal.
However, the core facts should remain consistent:
- Companies you have worked for
- Job titles and responsibilities
- Employment dates
- Education and certifications
- Main technologies and skills
When these details match, recruiters can focus on what really matters: your experience, your potential, and whether the role is a good fit for you.
Why This Can Put Candidates at Risk

Recruitment teams need to make decisions based on the information candidates provide.
When a CV presents one career story and LinkedIn suggests another, the recruitment team may not know which version is accurate. In some cases, this can affect whether the candidate moves forward in the process.
This is not always because the candidate lacks skills. Sometimes, it is simply because the application creates uncertainty.
And that is unfortunate, because it is avoidable.
A Simple Check Before Applying
Before sending your next application, open your CV and LinkedIn profile side by side.
Check your companies, dates, job titles, education, certifications, and relevant technical skills. Update anything that is missing or outdated. Make sure the information supports the same professional story.
It only takes a few minutes, but it can make a real difference.
Your CV may be what gets you noticed. Your LinkedIn profile may be what helps validate your experience.
Make sure they work together.
